Description
Planets in TRAPPIST-1 system. Illustration of a view from low orbit of one of the seven planets of the ultra-cool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1, with one of the inner planets seen in transit across the disc of its parent star. The other planets are also shown. TRAPPIST-1 is Jupiter-sized, and its planets are Earth-sized with several in a habitable zone for life. Three planets were discovered in 2015, with four more discovered in 2017, with a total of three planets in the habitable zone. This system has been studied using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and the ground-based TRAPPIST (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope). TRAPPIST-1 is 39 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Aquarius. This image was published in 2017.
