Born in the Hell's Kitchen area of NYC in 1941 he picked up his first camera at 10 years old and hasn't put one down since.His mother was a dancer in a traveling show his father a street preacher and patent medicine salesman on Times Square. After graduating The High School of The Performing Artsin 1959 he entered the US Army as a photographer for the First Special Operations Unit (Psyops) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
