Surrounded by an array of colorful wrapping paper and ribbon, Santa takes a moment to focus on a very special gift.
He is All Wrapped up in the Holiday – literally and figuratively – and given that he has so much experience with Christmas, it’s worth taking time to see what he knows.
And what does Santa know?
He knows that gifts, given from the heart, are beautiful things. They are not meant to be things that pressure people, that cause them anxiety, that make them wish that the season were over so they could get away from the stress of it all.
The stress of Christmas? How very absurd! And yet, how very, very corporate America.
Gently cradled in Santa’s hands, he holds a stuffed lamb, a child’s toy, and a symbol, for many, of the meaning behind the season. Pausing in his busy day of wrapping gifts (because Santa, unlike many CEOs, joins with his crew in doing the work that needs to be done, and does not find any task too minor for his time), Santa stops to think, to reflect, to enjoy the moment and the season.
This toy will find itself in the soft, chubby hands of a child. It will become part of that child’s play, that child’s imaginative day. It will rest in the arms of the child as they both sleep.
Innocence. Honesty. Goodness. Gentleness. Acceptance.
What incredible, incredible gifts these are – gifts that are the best we can give for the season, and indeed, all year round.
All Wrapped Up, the artwork, invites us to join Santa at his work table, surrounded by colorful paper and festive ribbons, and to stop, with him, from the noise and hubbub and activity – as fun and pleasurable as they are – and just be silent for a moment.
If we’re going to be all wrapped up, let us be wrapped in something good.
